Ms Carla Cate's Class Poetry
Brunswick, GA Middle School - March 2000

Red
hearts in love.
A cardinal named Fred, the red head.
It sounds like a flaming fish
  on an African Safari
or maybe it is the sound of love beating in your heart
or the screeching sound of death.
Red tastes sweet like hot peppers
  or a lipstick rose.
Red is hot, hairy, heavy.
Red can fly
  it can morph
it can paint you Kung Fu.
It makes you feel good.
Red...

Nervous...
An orange caution sign
   blinking   blinking   blinking.
The brown floor tiles that you stare at
before giving a speech to the whole school.
Black like a never-ending hole.
It happens when you're getting kissed
   for the first time
and you don't know what will happen next
         and forget what to do.
It is the sound of sweat
  dripping before a kiss.
The vibration of drums.
The last beat of life
And it smells musty
like Grandma's house
or like a lot of people
in the bathroom at the same time.
It is a headache.
Nervous...
