On
the morning of December 14, 2012 a group of 6th graders from East Hartford
MS and a group of senior citizens from Senior Care Center of East Hartford
gathered at the middle school. It was the last day of a 4-day
intergenerational creative writing program called 'Word Waves: Living Out
Loud', presented by Elizabeth Thomas :) and funded through the East
Hartford Fine Arts Council. As a group, we'd been writing together for
2 weeks and Friday, the 14th was our culminating celebration of voices and

Poetry Out Loud: National
Recitation Contest
To be involved in this program, you really need to start
early in the school year. Created by the National Endowment for the Arts
and the Poetry Foundation, this program encourages high school students to
memorize and perform great poems. Poetry Out Loud invites the
dynamic aspects of slam poetry, spoken word, and theater into the English
class. This exciting new program helps students master public speaking
skills, build self-confidence, and learn about their literary heritage.
