Mad...
Black like my heart when someone I hate passes my path
Red like my face when I get in trouble or frustrated
White like my fist that hit walls and people.
It happens when the snob comes over to me and talks junk
about what I wear or what I look like
It sounds like a whining girl when she gets hit
It smells like a baby's diaper when it comes off
Mad ....

Ode To Potatoes

Oh potatoes
Baked, Mashed, Fried, Cut
Once, twice, thrice baked
filling, wonderful taste
Oh how you taste
Bacon, Butter, Cheese, Creme
all add to your flavor
but none can match alone
This is my ode to potatoes

by Logan

From Mary Smith's Block 3 Class

Excited . . .
green like a tree, like a leaf swaying in the wind.

It would taste like lemon drops or a melon.

It would taste like cheese bites or a popsicle.

It feels like cat fur or hard like wood.

It sounds like a whistle at boot camp,
or screaming on the playground

or the purr of a cat.

Excited!

by Erica

Belligerent...

It sounds like a drill drilling into tough metal.

It smells like rotting eggs on the counter.

It’s gray like a fuzzy screen,
like a pencil scratching across a paper.

It happens when you’ve had a bad day.

Belligerent!

by Kelly

Excited...

Yellow like the sun, like the color of your bathing suit.

It happens when I go to see my sister,
when the sun is blazing on my skin.

It sounds like laughter and tastes like a sour lemon
on the side of your cup,

Drinking lemonade.

Excited!

by Sarah

Jealousy...

Gray like the clouds on a rainy day.

Red like a fire that burns inside.

It happens when she gets the credit when you did all the work.

Jealousy hurts you inside.

It sounds like a cat defending its territory.

It smells like sour milk that hasn’t been poured.

Jealousy!

by Alex

Happy...

Blue like the sky, like a watch.

It smells sour like a sour head,
tastes like a very sweet blueberry.

It feels like squashy and slimy ooze.

It looks nice,
and it calms you down when you’re feeling blue.

Happy!

by Spencer

Love...

Love is red like the heart in my chest.

It can happen when people who are special come near you.

It feels mushy inside and looks blurry.

Love!

by Jonathan

Sad...

Blue like a cold day, how you feel.

It happens when you get put down,
when you do something wrong.

It tastes like salty tears, rotting food.

It smells like a skunk’s foul stench,
like rotting fish.

It looks like fire burning,
like a boring picture.

Sad!

by Stephen

Cranky...

Red like an apple, like your face when you are mad, like lava.

Black like the head of a hammer,
like the steam of an engine,
like an oil slick.

Gray like a shark, like the clouds on a rainy day, like shadows.

It happens when you get up for a school day,
when you don’t get enough sleep,

when something doesn’t go your way.

It sounds like whining and smells nasty like garbage on a hot day.

Cranky!

Class Poem

From Evelyn Garrow's Class

Anxiety

Red like hot fire, like anger, like pain.

Gray like haze, like stone, like fear.

It happens before an interview, when you receive a test,
when a friend is in an accident.

Sounds like nails scraping a chalkboard, like a piercing scream,
like tires screeching.

Smells like oil, like smoke, like burning rubber.

Anxiety…

by Jen

Vengefulness

Grey like a haunting gargoyle made of stone,

like the hairs on your back that stand up on end,

a devilish stare your enemy would give…

Yellow like the moon’s ghoulish smile on All Hallows Eve,

like a goblin’s cackling laugh,

a black cat’s peering eyes…

Feels like a kittens rough tongue on your skin,

like a sharp stone embedded in your hand,

a furious dog’s stinging bite.

Smells like a musty forest,

like a lion’s hot breath after pouncing on his prey,

droplets of sweat trickling down your neck
after waking up from a nightmare.

Sounds like chalk screeching on a blackboard,

like a banshee’s shrieking cry,

a boiling cauldron exposing small green bubbles.

It happens when you want to seek revenge,

when you feel overwhelmed with jealousy.

Vengefulness….

by Katrina

Terror

Black like a silent night, like a shadow watching you,

like the dark heart of evil.

It happens when a war breaks out, a terrorist attacks,
when you’re all alone.

It sounds like a deafening beat of a heart,
like a child screaming at an invader,

like a door creaking open when the clock strikes 12:00.

It looks like a masked robber, like a murderer, like a war.

Terror…

by Kyle

Hope

Yellow like sunlight glistening on a soft carpet,
like a trophy from a sporting event,

like Kobe Bryant’s jersey as he weaves through defenders
for a two-handed slam-dunk.

It happens when your grades start to improve,

when your adrenaline starts to pump,

when you see the light at the end of the tunnel.

It sounds like the wind whispering, birds chirping,
and leaves rustling.

It smells like decorative Christmas cookies
freshly baked on Christmas Eve,

like turkey on Thanksgiving Day,

and fresh brewed coffee in the morning.

It tastes like a crisp ripe apple, like a hot cheesy slice of pizza,

like chocolate chip cookies and a glass of cold milk.

It looks like a sunrise,

like an aurora borealis and the stars gleaming at night.

It feels like petting a kitten’s soft fur, like a fluffy pillow,

like a warm blanket on a chilly winter’s night.

Hope…

Anger

Red like fire, like leaves in the autumn, like a barn on a farm.

Black like charcoal, like shadows hidden in the darkness.

It happens when a day goes wrong,

when you can’t stand the world anymore.

It sounds like glass shattering, like thunder booming,

like a young child screaming.

Anger…

by Casey

Anger

Red like the flames of fire, like hot lumps of coal,

like wild roses thirsting for water.

Black like nightfall, like dark caves, like death.

It happens when rumors are spread about you,

you get frustrated, you become grounded.

It sounds like misery, like a pack of wolves howling,

like someone crying in the night.

It smells like dirt that holds a coffin, like tear drops falling,
like burnt toast.

It tastes like sorrow, stale chocolate chip cookies,

salty ocean water.

It feels like hunger, like a stomach ache, like emptiness.

It looks like death, like bones of a body from years ago,

like a sky with no stars.

Anger

by Becky

Anger

If anger was a color, it would be red.

Red is the color your face turns when your peers
call you hurtful names,

like blood trickling down your arm, like an explosion of fury.

Orange could also represent anger.

Orange is the color of a pumpkin smashed on the sidewalk,

like dancing flames that lick the air.

Anger can be expressed as big as the orange planet, Jupiter.

It happens when you are humiliated,

when a fight starts,

and when your friend isn’t a friend anymore.

If anger had a sound, it would sound like a tortured screaming,

like fists pounding the ground,

like a fully grown lion roaring.

If anger has a smell, it would smell like smog,

like the stench of vomit, like rotting dead.

Anger…

Joy

Joy would be yellow like the bright sun,

like warm summer days, like fresh lemons.

Joy happens when I receive all A’s,

when a silver Porsche arrives with a card labeled Happy Birthday.

Joy sounds like a parade, like a singing bird,
like a triumphant trumpet.

Joy feels like a cool spring day, like a fluffy pillow,
like a warm breeze.

JOY!

by Michael

Hatred

Red like boiling blood, like a hazy fog, like fire.

Black like coal, a starless night, like death.

It smells like smoke, like burning wood, like guns.

It happens in fights, in war, any time on Earth.

It feels cold like glass,

burns like melting steel,

and restrains movement like a whipping wind.

Hatred!

by Michael

Sorrow

Like the dry mist that engulfs cities on foggy nights.

Like the sacks full of dirt
abandoned behind after the collapse of the twin towers

Like the dreaded color grey

Grey like the filthy colors that linger around the moon on Halloween Night.

Grey like a tornado punishing every object
or person standing in its raging path.

Grey like a chalkboard left behind in a run down school,
not a single person dared step in, not a single soul.

Sorrow happens when a child lets their guard down,

giving full opportunity for sorrow to attach itself in their life,

draining every ounce of happiness,

and departing the child with not a single cheerful pastime
or memory to cherish.

When a loved, elderly grandmother must surrender
her last moments on earth,

waiting fearfully for death to snatch their life away…

Sorrow...

by Jessica

Surprise

Red like a firework exploding overhead,

like a newly ripened strawberry,

or a candle flame on a cake from a surprise party.

It happens when you get a new puppy for Christmas,

when everyone pops up and yells ‘Happy Birthday’,

and when you receive all A’s when expecting all C’s.

It sounds like the backfire of a car making you jump,

when the bungee cord snaps you back into the air,

and when you feel weightless in space.

It looks like someone jumping out from behind a bush,

like the big curve on a roller coaster,

like an oncoming truck which turns out to be a flash light.

Surprise…

by Dan

Joyful

Blue like the calm ocean, the quiet flowing sky,
the blue painting on the wall.

It happens when you make a basket
at the end of a basketball game,

when you win the lottery,

or when you get free things.

It feels like a soft pillow, like jumping into a pile of leaves,
like a warm fire.

It smells like nice warm pizza, like a fragrant flower,
like a nice apple pie.

JOYFUL!

by Corey

Loneliness

Loneliness is like the color black, it’s dark, abandoned,
and shameful.

It feels like you’re standing in the middle of a crowded room

screaming at the top of your lungs and no one even looks up.

It happens when you’re sitting at lunch with no one around you,

not even at the other side of the table.

It gives you chills, your face turns red,
and seems like you can’t breath.

You think to yourself, did someone just laugh at me,

and if so, should I just ignore them and turn away?

Suddenly you take a deep breathe and feel different.

The feeling is black, the feeling is lonely…

Loneliness…

Happy

Happy is green like a field of grass, like a frog, like a tree.

It is red like Mars, like apples, like Clifford.

It happens when you wake up to Christmas morning,

when you get 100 on a test,

when you win a game.

It sounds like waves clashing against the beach,
like a roar of a tiger, like a train whistle.

It smells like a field of flowers, like spring morning, like candy.

Happy!
